On the 23rd of July, communities around Akyemensa Krobo in the in the Eastern Region experienced a rarity in modern meteorology. Yes it rained not hailstones , and it did not snow but it rained but the rains collected was black in colour. My elementary science taught me one property of pure water and that is pure water colouress. Oh yes the localities were not urbanised so we can attribute it to the roofing sheets being dirty or blackened with smoke. But this certainly cannot happen in all houses. What about those which were not from harvested sources?
So I begin to ask. What could be the cause of this black rains? In my over twenty something years of existence this is my first time I am hearing such an occurrence.According to modernghana one renowned Scientist by name Jonathan Kelvin Semetey has attributed this rare occurrence to a sulphur related acid rain. Well I cannot approve or disprove his assertion. I can only come to that conclusion when sample of the rains are tested and its chemical composition results are published.
As a Climateer I am curious and asking more questions. What caused this? Could it be another evidence of climate change in disguise?Whatever the case is our climate is not what it used to be and Climate Change is a reality not a rarity today.
